Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition that causes pain in the heel and the bottom of the foot. It is caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a band of tissue that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes.
The plantar fascia acts as a shock absorber and helps to support the arch of the foot. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, it can cause heel pain, especially when walking or standing for long periods of time.
Symptoms of plantar
fasciitis may include
- Rest
- Stabbing pain in the heel or arch of the foot
- Pain that is worse when standing or walking after periods of rest, and
- Pain that is relieved by rest. The condition is often seen in people who are overweight, have high arches or flat feet, or who wear shoes with inadequate support.
- It can also be caused by overuse, such as from running or other high-impact activities.
Treatment for plantar
fasciitis may include
- Rest
- Stretching exercises
- Physical therapy, and
- The use of orthotic inserts or special shoes to help support the arch of the foot
- In some cases, a corticosteroid injection may be used to reduce inflammation
- In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to release the plantar fascia or to correct any underlying structural problems in the foot.
